The Midninght Sun and The Northern Light
In Norway
you will meet the midnight sun in the Arctic Circle area. The further north, or the higher you get, the season will be longer. There are very good possibilities to see 24 hour sunlight in our area. Or you can see the sun roll in the horizon at midnight to the north.
From the end of June till the end of August it is possible to experience the Midnight Sun along our part of the coast from Nesna to Rødøy, or you can see the Midnight Sun from one of the mountains in or around the glaciers of Svartisen and Okstindan.
Midwinter we loose the sun for a period, and then it's good that we have a lot of snow and a clear star sky to give us a little light. The fantastic view that the Northern Light give is just beautiful, and should be experienced.
The Northern Light. Phenomenon on the night sky, specially strong in belts around the magnetic poles, is on the Northern hemisphere called Northern Light (lat. Aurora Borealis), and on the southern hemisphere called Southern Light (lat. Aurora Australis). Varies in intensity, coloured from white green to deep red, and come in different shapes, f. ex. beams, arches and draperies. The Northern Light stretches to about 90 km from the earth at the lowest. The frequency changes in time with the sun activity in an 11- year period. With our small communities and large wilderness areas in the mountaisn or along the Helgeland coast, there are many excellent places to observe the Northern Light.
Polar circles, degrees of latitude on the Northern and Southern hemisphere in an angel from the poles that's equivalent the ecliptics angel to the level of the Equator, 23°27'. The Arctic Circles is therefore situated on 66°33' northern and southern latitude. By summer solstice the centre of the sun is at midnight in the horizon of the northern arctic circle, and at winter solstice the same at the southern arctic circle.
